Halloween Costumes

my sister and brother in the early 70s

Oh, Halloween. Long gone are the days of yore, when you could snag a plastic-bag costume off the shelf at Gold Circle and wander the neighborhood after dark, filling a pillowcase with Mallowbars and home-made cookies. A $4.99 investment yielded a ransom of sugar and food coloring.

Who am I kidding. My mom never let us get those plastic bag costumes. I can actually remember her shaking her head as she watched neighbor kids walk down the street dressed as the cartoon character of the season. She would sigh and look at us, as if to say 'see, children, that's what you get when your mother plays too much tennis.'  My mom did not mess around with the store-bought costume. We went as clowns. Every year. My mother made super-elaborate homemade clown costumes and we (in the days before the killer clown) wore them for years. Puffy legs and arms were stuffed with newspaper that left black marks on our skin. The rick-rack edged collars and tall, pointy hats were embellished with handmade pompoms. The costume was always adorable, especially as there were three of us, stair-stepped in height like a clown troop from the world's cutest circus. The taller we got, the less newspaper she stuffed into the costumes to puff them out.

I do remember putting my foot down at one point and INSISTING that I was not going to be a clown. No how, no way. I wanted to be something pretty. Something that involved a fancy dress, or at least a wig and lipstick. We came up with the politically correct Gypsy Woman/Spanish Princess/Royal Person costume, which I wore in some variation for about five more years. It involved (always) a long fancy skirt, a shawl, an adult-boutique-worthy black lace eye mask and a lace fan. Also, since I grew up in Ohio, my winter coat was probably under there somewhere. Fancy.

After I refused to clown around, my siblings also got on the special costumes boat. In the subsequent years my mom created a Henson Studios-worthy Miss Piggy, a medieval princess (which involved me ruining a beautiful sheer dress with a puffy winter coat because of snow on Halloween) and even an Elvis Presley costume for our family dog. She's even made costumes and costume parts for her grandchildren. I do remember her sighing about new clown costumes a few years back, when my girls were toddlers, but I gently told her no.

Here in North Carolina we are lucky that Halloween eve can often be balmy. I've walked the dark streets after princesses, vampires and black cats in my shirtsleeves. My daughters' costumes have not needed long velvet capes or custom fur coats, but if they did, I'm pretty sure that Grandma would oblige.

If you don't have a Grandma to chain to the sewing machine, you should join me on Thursday night at Craft Habit Raleigh. I'll be there, with a box of mis-fit supplies and parts, trying to figure out what I can be this Halloween. The Costume Jam details are right here.

Weekly Newsletter - you should just subscribe!

Good afternoon! I'm sorry my note is late today. I returned from a trip to the mountains yesterday and my bed was SO comfortable. I feel like I left a big part of my brain under a tree in Western NC. Perhaps it's there now, watching a blue-tailed skink scamper down a branch, into a stream?

I had a lot of fun on my mountain trip. We saw some amazing bear tracks (!!!) incredible starry skies and lots of those skinks. I am happy to be back, though. I filled my brain and my sketch books with lots of fun ideas for projects that I want to get started on. This hot weather we'll enjoy for the rest of the week gives me great incentive to stay inside in the cool air and bring those ideas to reality.

If you are looking for cool, indoor activities, we have a few good classes this weekend (look below) plus our Make-N-Take jars are full of fun ideas for you. The Decopatch paper coupon on the bottom of this note can help you to do this if you really want to keep busy!

Pop-Up Sunday Vintage Market is THIS Sunday, and I'm looking forward to a great day. We'll have beer donated by our friends at Carolina Brewery (yum!) and all our donations will go to support Global H2O. This clean water initiative was started by a group of NCSU and UNC graduates and has put clean water wells in 30 villages in Uganda. While we don't usually support international charities at Pop-Up, the strong work done by Global H2O was so compelling we had to work with them. Learn more about Global H2O here, or when you stop by the Carolina Brewery tent at Pop-Up this Sunday. Find the list of vendors at this month's Pop-Up here

some new items in the store this week:

and now in our Etsy shop:

Well, since my brain doesn't seem to have actually returned from the mountains yet, I think I'll see if I can find some busy-work today. Perhaps there are some beads I can sort? I might be able to find those around here somewhere...

I'll see you soon-

Newsletter Message, June 23rd, 2015

This week I am writing to you from a (little bit cleaner) studio space. I have tried implementing the KonMari method of house tidying and it seems to be working. This is a mystical Japanese system where you throw out 4/5th of your clothing, and afterwards reassure the remaining items that you love them by folding everything with great care. The traumatized survivor garments then encourage the rest of your house to become more tidy. I'm a bit unclear on the exact details of this last part, but I did find myself spending two hours on Sunday carefully lining up my jewelry tools on a shelf in my studioand they all fit. This has never happened before. I am going to say the tools have been scared straight by my last four tee shirts.

It's good I've been doing all this tidying, as Pop-Up Sunday is THIS weekend and the slate of vintage vendors is quite significant. Since I've decimated my clothing in order to establish my closet dominance, there's lots of room for new items. After all, who wants to look at empty closet racks?
Now, before someone writes me and says 'oh, you have the KonMari method all wrong!' let me just explain. I did read the book (in January) and then sorted out all of my clothing (in, February? March? no, maybe April?) and so this has not been instantaneous. My closet and drawers HAVE stayed cleaner and neater. I can get dressed faster. I think the clothing that remains seems VERY GRATEFUL to have not been swooped off to the thrift store.

I believe the actual trick is that after looking at my tidy closet for a while (a few months) my brain just couldn't take the messy tools anymore. So the tools got neatened. I didn't eliminate any. They are jewelry tools, so there ARE NO EXTRAS.  I can get rid of a tee shirt that has weird sleeves, but a pair of pliers? I might need that exact size one day...I might...and as far as beads? Ribbon? Art supplies? Nope, there is NO such thing as extras. I haven't done any studio purging, but somehow things do seem neater in here.

I'll see you soon-

Newsletter message, June 9, 2015

Greetings!

How is your summer going? Yes, I know that the season technically starts on the 21st, but here in North Carolina the weather is already toasty. I've developed a strong relationship with my sandals. Our evenings on the porch now involve a fair amount of cricket chirping, mixed in with the frog songs.

ahh...

I'm excited to welcome summer. I look forward to some lazy days. I am planning a big studio sorting; my girls both need new desks (they currently use junior-sized, 1970's school desks) and my bead collection needs some tidying. I like to take crafts with me on trips. Doing that requires a bit of pre-planning and packing. My problem is that I often don't unpack until the night before the next trip. I'm hoping to get ahead of my self and sort things out so that I'll be ready for an adventure. I like to use a big bag with several clear storage bins and lots of zip-up bags for tools and supplies, but it may be time for a new way to travel.

Speaking of travel and places I love, today's Try It features one of our NC charms. This leather-and-chain bracelet is a nice little token to accompany you on your summer adventures.

Did you know that Ornamentea will be 16 in September? We are already planning our Sweet 16 party, and of course, you are invited. I'm thinking that a lot of my chill-out time this summer may involve a new Pinterest page...Ornamentea's Big Sweet 16!  If you are on Pinterest, won't you follow us and help me plan it? Find our Pinterest page here.

I'll see you soon-

Newsletter Message; cats and dogs

Good morning. I'm a bit late today. My bed was too compelling, and every time I thought about getting up, one of my dogs would shoot me a look that clearly said 'Lie down, good girl!'

I've had a lot of pets throughout my life. My husband and I bonded during our first (blind) date by talking about how much we hated cats, how weirdly obsessive their owners were, how they shed everywhere and didn't come when you called them. We kept tropical fish in a giant aquarium that dwarfed our miniscule apartment. After we married (it was a good blind date) we moved to Texas and became the obsessive owners of a cat who came when she was called and had the ability to shed in places you were pretty sure she had never been. We liked to refer to our dating days as 'when we used to hate cats' as we built elaborate cat play structures out of empty cardboard boxes. Finally, we had to admit we are both just animal people. Over the years our family has included chickens, hermit crabs and bees, although I'm not sure I'd classify the last as pets. Now we have two dogs who take up more bed space than my husband or I are happy with. We amuse ourselves by talking in the dogs voices.

I can't imagine not having a pet.

If you have a vacancy in the pet department, we will have adoptable kitties at Pop-Up Sunday this weekend. The fine folks from Safe Haven for Cats, a very lovely group, will have some of their favorite cats here for you to meet. Even if your house zoo is full, you can come by and drink an Abita beer, eat a taco and help raise some money for the cats. Find out about our Pop-Up vendors here.

This week at the shop we are putting out a collection of old trade beads and stones purchased from an estate. So far we've unboxed some very old Czech glass cabochons, odd rhinestones and a selection of glass eyes (the hand-worked kind on wires) and old rhinestone set beads. I'll post pictures on facebook and instagram as I get the items put out.

If you haven't yet purchased your tickets to Redress Raleigh on May 29th, hurry up. They are on sale here. We are excited to see the work of Ornamentea staff member Maria Juri and customer Rock Kershaw in the fashion show...it will be good!

I'll see you soon-

  • we have new vintage crystals in the mix bowl, including larger sizes you want for setting in solder, beaded bezels and more
  • new shell strands are perfect for beachy earrings
  • we've restocked the U.S.A. made plated wire...hurry before it sells out again
  • there is still a nice selection of 50% off stone strands available; Peruvian opal, smokey quartz, amethyst, jade, hematite and more. Very pretty strands, very nicely priced.
  • rawhide mallets, fine jeweler's files, pumice-filled soldering pans and other bench tools have been restocked

Tuesday Newsletter message, April 21st

Good morning. I hope you are having a good week, so far. I am having a creative burst of energy that has me waking up at 4:00 am and wanting to make things.

Or it might be the birds.

We've been sleeping with the windows open lately and those birds really DO get up early. I know they have worms to catch, but still...the tweet-tweeting begins at 4:00 (or earlier!) every morning. I try to incorporate it in my dreams and keep sleeping. Some mornings that works out and I slumber on, dreaming of a tropical oasis with sweet birds bringing me sun hats and fancy drinks.  Other mornings the tweeting turns into that weird dream where a bunch of robins are chasing me through the library trying to get my overdue book from 1989 and I'm not wearing shoes and there's a librarian that looks exactly like John Cleese. That dream is never good.

Since I was up so early this morning (thank you very much, Mr. Cleese!) I decided to revisit our Pop-Up Sunday pics from last year. That was fun. This weekend is our first Pop-Up of the 2015. I am super excited. We are raising money for Healing Ceilings and have a new sponsor, WUNC. We have some amazing vendors, two delicious food trucks, an Elizabeth Galecke photo booth, great craft beer, wine, CUPCAKES and more. Did I say I was excited? Pop-Up is like a day-long party with shopping, drinks and food. Learn more here and join us

This Friday and Saturday we are hosting Suzie Oware for a fabulous trunk show in our North Classroom. She'll begin the fun with a special talk about the meanings and messages in Ghanaian glass beads on Thursday night. This talk includes a preview of the trunk show, and there are a limited number of spots remaining. If you want to register for the talk, click this link and snap up one of those seats
this week's interesting items

  • our Mixed-Media necklaces, shown below - a combo of fibers and a mix of interesting beads - are THE thing to pair with your summer clothes. Think easy and casual, arty and interesting. Come in and we'll show you how to make that tricky, adjustable knot at the back, too!
  • back in stock: ball chaincross-lock tweezersgold-plated wiremetallic seed beads

I am proud to say that at this moment I don't have any outstanding library books. I have no idea why the birds keep harassing me about them.

This week will fly by...I hope to see you!

Weekly newsletter - the message from Cynthia

From our weekly store newsletter-

I'm sorry for my late-day Tuesday email. I wish I could say that I was enjoying a Spring-Break-related sleep in, but that was not the case. I got behind because of the potent combo of Enameling Camp/wall painting/broken phone.

Actually, that's not a very good excuse. Well, the wall painting is. If you haven't yet seen the experimental color on the back wall, come check it out. I've finally decided on something that only requires about 16 coats of glaze and dry brush. It shows the beads off nicely and is a lovely change from the buttercream color we've enjoyed for so many years. Now if I could only get the painting finished...

About my phone? let's just say that they gave me a complete replacement. I've been kinda quiet on the social medias lately, as my phone had basically decided to turn itself into a very fancy rectangle of black glass and plastic. With wifi, sometimes. I'm glad it is fixed.

The enameling camp is going beautifully. The campers are hard at work on their projects and have been enjoying the new techniques and materials they've played with. If you missed out on our Spring camp, watch for the date announcement for the Fall version. Laura will be back with all-new projects and even more techniques.

In the advance-notice department, we are putting together a fab group of classes and make-n-takes for Mother's Day weekend. What does mom want? She wants to take a class! Maybe with you, or maybe by herself, or maybe with your favorite auntie. Watch this space and the classes page for lots of great classes you and mom will both love.

do you want to create a special gift?

graduation, weddings, and transitions
Somehow, it seems like so many folks I know are gearing up for a transition this season. Nephews are graduating, friends are moving away, couples are marrying.

A wonderful gift for a friend in transition can be an altered book themed around their event. In Carol Owen's upcoming class, you can learn how to construct an altered book that can be an interactive scrapbook, engaging photo journal or inspiring travel diary. Carol will show you how to construct fold-outs, pockets, pages and more.

Newsletter: Are you doing Spring Break wrong?

The following message is excerpted from our weekly store newsletter. If you don't get your own copy in your email inbox, every Tuesday morning, you are missing info like this AND coupons, special offers and gossip. Click the link in the side bar to subscribe to our newsletter.

It's Spring Break at my house and, according to my middle school daughter, we are not doing it right. I figured she could use her time off school to work on math skills by doing some work for mom and dad at the bead store.

Her vision was a bit different. I am pretty sure it involved a lot of time at a mythical beach vacation, maybe with a zip-line tour and some swimming with the dolphins. Aside from the fact that she doesn't have that much money in her savings account, her sister has a different break schedule this year, so we are staying home. Her first day of break involved the grocery store, laundry, and cutting up tee shirts to make tank tops.

Living la vida loca, my friend.

Read on to learn more about a half-off sale item, a way to save $10 on a class and an upcoming trunk show
